From Ghana to London – Ian’s Scoliosis Story

Earlier this year, the Scoliosis SOS Clinic helped 16-year-old Ian from Ghana to overcome his 50-degree scoliosis. Ian’s spine began to develop a curve when he was 12 years old. As he grew, the curvature got bigger and bigger; when Ian’s mother noticed the condition of his spine, she became worried and sent Ian for some X-rays, which led to a scoliosis diagnosis. This came as a shock to Ian, who hadn’t even heard of scoliosis before, but he did some research and began to learn more about his condition and the treatments available. Unfortunately for Ian, the treatment options in Ghana were limited, but a friend of his mother recommended the Scoliosis SOS Clinic in London. Soon after, Ian left Ghana for the first time and came to the UK for a 4-week treatment course to help correct the curve in his spine. Ian faced some difficulties at the start of his treatment programme due to him being shy and sensitive about his condition. As time went by, however, Ian became much more comfortable, and by the end of the course he felt a lot more confident when showing his back and spine. Ian found our corrective exercises quite challenging at first, but as time passed, he became used to the exercises and was soon able to perform them without any problems. Throughout this whole process, Ian became more confident not just in the way he felt about his body, but also in a social sense, making lots of new friends from different parts of the world. Ian described the Scoliosis SOS therapists as “really encouraging” throughout his treatment course, helping him to get to know his body better and gain a greater understanding of his condition. To anybody else suffering from scoliosis, Ian recommends visiting the Scoliosis SOS Clinic to receive the same guidance and treatment that he had. Where to Eat in London

Many of the patients who receive treatment here at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic – particularly our many overseas patients – opt to stay in our self-catering accommodation for the duration of their ScolioGold course. There are several studio apartments within the clinic building, and staying with us means that the City of London is right on your doorstep!

Bari Bari

Bari Bari offers a wide range of traditional Korean dishes, plus a few modern twists. Their menu is packed with delicious stews, hot pots, and sizzling Korean barbecue dishes.

The Thai Square group has restaurants all over London – their Minories location is a mere 3-minute walk from our front door. 10 Things to Do in London

We at the Scoliosis SOS Clinic are very lucky to be based right in the centre of London. Not only does our location make it easy for people to visit us from all over the world, it also means that we’ve got some amazing attractions and landmarks right on our doorstep.

If you’re thinking of attending a ScolioGold treatment course and staying at our self-catering accommodation in the heart of London, here are 10 things you might want to squeeze in while you’re here:

1. London Eye

Cost: £21.20 (standard entry ticket)

Nearest Tube Station: Waterloo

Approximate Distance from Scoliosis SOS Clinic: 3 miles

Constructed just prior to the turn of the millennium, the London Eye has become one of the city’s most iconic and instantly-recognisable landmarks. One ride lasts 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to drink in the stunning view as you rise more than 400 feet above the ground.

2. Harrods Department Store

4. Tower of London

See the Crown Jewels, spot the ravens, and learn all about this infamous London landmark and the people who have dwelled within in its walls down the centuries. The West End’s longest-running musical is well worth catching if you can get your hands on a ticket! Currently running at the Queen’s Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, Les Misérables is the epic show that gave the world songs like I Dreamed a Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing? and Bring Him Home. You may have seen the movie starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, but there’s no substitute for seeing ‘Les Mis’ live on stage.

6. Madame Tussauds

This world-famous wax museum gives visitors the chance to meet movie stars, stand next to famous fictional characters, and even pose with members of the British Royal Family. Recent additions to the Madame Tussauds collection include Benedict Cumberbatch, Adele, Justin Bieber, and a number of famous faces from of the Star Wars films.

7. Rough Trade East

If you’re a music fan, this shop’s name may ring a bell – not only is Rough Trade one of the UK’s most successful independent record stores, it’s also the record label that released classic albums by bands like The Smiths and (more recently) The Strokes and The Libertines. Rough Trade East is a must-visit for music fans in London – the shop boasts a wide range of CDs and vinyl records, plus it frequently hosts in-store gigs and signing events. It’s only a stone’s throw from the well-known Brick Lane Market, too.

8. Buckingham Palace

The Royal Family are of course a big draw for many foreign visitors to the United Kingdom, and if you’re interested in catching a glimpse of the Royal lifestyle then Buckingham Palace (the Queen’s London residence) is the attraction for you. Various guided tours are available at different times of the year, but if you’re short on cash you can still go and see the palace and its magnificent grounds free of charge.

9. The Sherlock Holmes Museum

London is, of course, the home of fabled detective extraordinaire Sherlock Holmes. This exhibition can be found on Baker Street (where Holmes supposedly lived), and it’s a must-see for any fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s books and the many movies and TV shows they inspired.
